The Tempus Edge: Bridging the Gap with Data Partners

In our previous post, we explored the Tempus Data Pipeline, a sophisticated, end-to-end system designed to transform raw clinical, molecular, and imaging information into actionable insights at exabyte scale. In this installment, we turn to a critical component of that pipeline: the Tempus Edge Platform.

 

If we consider that the data pipeline operates as the brain of Tempus’s infrastructure, then Edge is the nervous system. It is the secure, intelligent interface that extends Tempus’s advanced capabilities directly to data partners across the healthcare ecosystem, including health systems, providers, laboratories, and life sciences organizations, helping ensure that the power of precision medicine is accessible where it matters most.

The Challenge: Healthcare’s “Last Mile” Problem

 

Modern healthcare and life sciences organizations generate enormous volumes of data, from electronic health records (EHRs) and lab results to radiology images, genomic sequencing files, and research datasets. However, much of this data remains fragmented across disparate, siloed systems and stored in incompatible formats, severely limiting its potential for meaningful analysis and insights.

 

Moving this data securely and in a compliant manner between partners—and delivering insights, applications, and derived outputs back into operational or research environments—is one of the hardest infrastructure problems in the industry. This is the “last mile” challenge, and it is the problem the Tempus Edge Platform was built to solve.

The Tempus Edge Platform: Three Components, One Secure, Unified Architecture

The Tempus Edge Platform is comprised of three core components: Edge Appliance, Edge API, and Edge Sail. Each work together to enable bidirectional data exchange between partner environments and Tempus’s cloud infrastructure. Together, they provide a unified integration architecture for transferring clinical, imaging, molecular, genomic, and other healthcare and life sciences data across a wide range of workflows.

 

In the absence of a purpose-built platform like Edge, organizations may rely on alternatives such as email, VPN-based file transfers, shared storage tools like Dropbox or Box, or manual upload processes. While these methods may be appropriate for certain limited use cases, they can introduce greater operational complexity and may be more difficult to standardize, monitor, and govern consistently across enterprise environments. Edge is designed to support a more centralized and automated approach to data exchange, helping organizations reduce manual handling and support oversight, reliability, and scaled data movement.

 

Edge Appliance

 

The Edge Appliance is a lightweight software component deployed as a virtual machine within a partner’s IT environment. Acting as an outpost inside the partner network, it connects to on-premises systems that are not accessible from the public internet, including imaging systems, clinical messaging interfaces, databases, file storage, and other internal systems.

 

The Appliance bridges partner infrastructure with Tempus’s cloud while helping keep sensitive data protected within the customer environment until it is ready for transmission. Data stored on-premises is encrypted at rest, and outbound communication to Tempus is restricted to channels over port 443. The Appliance communicates with Tempus’s cloud exclusively through Edge API and Edge Sail, ensuring a consistent and controlled integration model. Access to data and resources within the customer environment is governed by strict role-based access controls, helping limit exposure and enforce least-privilege access.

 

Edge API

 

The Edge API is a RESTful interface designed for near-real-time data exchange. It is the primary mechanism for workflows that require speed, reliability, and strict adherence to defined data contracts—such as submitting a genomic test order, receiving results back into an EHR or partner application, transmitting timely patient data to support care gap identification, or exchanging structured data for downstream analytics and operational workflows.

 

Built around the FHIR R4 standard where appropriate, the Edge API supports standards-based interoperability through structured data exchange. Its strict input validation helps ensure that only well-formed, compliant data enters the system, creating a predictable and dependable experience for partner technical teams.

 

Security is built directly into the API layer. The Edge API uses OAuth 2.0 authentication with enterprise-grade identity management to support strong verification and authorization. It is also protected by a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to defend against threats such as DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) attacks, SQL injection, and cross-site scripting. It includes rate limiting and throttling to prevent abuse and resource exhaustion while maintaining stable service levels for clients.

 

Edge Sail

 

While the Edge API supports real-time, transactional exchange, Edge Sail is optimized for batch-oriented transfers of large data volumes. It supports common industry file transfer protocols, enabling efficient synchronization between a partner’s storage environment and Tempus systems. Depending on the use case, Edge Sail can support either Tempus pulling or pushing data directly from or to the partner cloud, or allow the partner to pull or push data from or to the Tempus cloud.

 

Edge Sail is especially well suited for large-scale workflows, such as ingesting historical datasets into Tempus’s platform or delivering curated datasets back to a health system, research organization, or life sciences partner. As with all Edge Platform data movement, these transfers occur within a tightly controlled security framework designed to minimize unnecessary exposure and maintain full traceability of data movement.

 

How the Components Work Together

 

A key architectural decision is that the Edge Appliance communicates with Tempus’s cloud only through Edge API and Edge Sail. This means that all workflows supported by the API and Sail are inherently supported by the Appliance as well, giving partners a consistent integration experience regardless of which component they use.

 

This design reduces the operational burden on partner technical teams while supporting both real-time and batch-based workflows within a single architecture. It also creates a data modality-agnostic transport layer: whether the data is a structured lab result, an unstructured clinical note, a radiology image, a genomic sequencing file, or a research dataset, the Edge Platform can move it efficiently.

Edge in Practice: From Installation to Insight in Under Three Months

 

The architecture described above is designed to minimize complexity, but the real test is how it performs in practice. A recent implementation with a major health system illustrates what the Edge Platform can look like in the field.

 

The Challenge

 

Traditional data integration projects in healthcare are notoriously slow. Establishing a connection between a health system’s EHR and an external analytics platform and validating that structured clinical data is landing correctly typically takes six to eight months, often without completing full user acceptance testing (UAT) due to access limitations.

 

The Solution: Edge Appliance

 

Using the Edge Appliance’s direct database connectivity, Tempus was able to establish a read-only connection to the health system’s EHR reporting database. Critically, this connection was:

  • Scoped to only the specific data tables authorized by the partner, meaning Tempus sees only what is needed and nothing more.

  • Deployed in a shadow production environment, ensuring zero impact on the health system’s live clinical operations.

  • Managed end-to-end by Tempus, with data extraction queries configured, validated, and adjusted by Tempus engineers with 24/7 access, requiring no ongoing involvement from the partner’s IT team.

The Results

 

The Edge Appliance was installed and structured clinical data was flowing into the Tempus platform—validated and ready for analysis—in less than three months from project kickoff.

 

Importantly, that timeline reflects total elapsed implementation time, including project coordination, security and access approvals, scheduling, validation, and user acceptance testing, not continuous hands-on technical work.

 

The actual labor from integration engineers required was minimal. The health system contributed just 1.5 hours of total IT time, while Tempus completed approximately 6 hours of hands-to-keyboard technical work. This made the deployment more than 2x faster than comparable implementations while substantially reducing partner resource requirements.

By managing the technical complexity on the Tempus side while allowing the health system to retain full control over what data was shared, Edge enabled a targeted integration that protected data and accelerated time to value.

 

While this example reflects a health system deployment, the same architecture can be applied across a broad range of data partners, consistently reducing IT burden, shortening implementation timelines, and maintaining strong control, security, and auditability throughout the data exchange lifecycle.

From Edge to Action: Powering Clinical and Research Impact

 

The ultimate validation of the Edge Platform lies not only in the data it moves, but in the downstream impact it enables. By providing a continuous stream of high-fidelity, multimodal data, Edge helps power Tempus’s suite of AI-enabled applications and data workflows—transforming raw information into decision support, operational intelligence, and research-ready outputs.

Bidirectional by Design

 

The Edge Platform is not merely an ingestion mechanism. It also facilitates the crucial egress of insights, application outputs, and derived datasets back into partner environments. A physician may receive intelligence directly within the EHR, while a life sciences or research partner may receive curated data products or analytics outputs within their own systems and workflows.

Enabling AI and Data-Driven Workflows

 

Because the Data Platform has already normalized, harmonized, and structured the underlying data, AI models and downstream applications can be deployed on top of high-fidelity, multimodal feature sets rather than raw, noisy data. This significantly enhances the accuracy, reliability, and usability of resulting insights.

 

The data delivered via Edge supports applications and workflows that can:

  • Automate trial matching
    Programmatically screening patient populations against clinical trial criteria, accelerating enrollment and access to innovative therapies.

  • Identify care gaps
    Scanning for discrepancies between a patient’s current care and established clinical guidelines, such as identifying patients eligible for biomarker testing who have not yet been tested.

  • Provide clinical decision support
    Offering timely, AI-powered recommendations to physicians, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning across oncology, cardiology, and beyond.

  • Support research and life sciences workflows
    Delivering curated datasets, derived variables, and other structured outputs that can enable translational research, evidence generation, and biomarker- or population-level analyses.
